The History
The popularity and acceptance of homeopathy in North America have ebbed and flowed over time. It is striking to contrast the enthusiastic embrace of homeopathy in the past with the present day. In 1835, one of our foremost pioneers, Dr. Constantine Hering, published The Homeopathic Domestic Physician, a small tome of acute-care and first-aid advice. Its popularity necessitated the release of seven editions over fifty subsequent years. The book accompanied a remedy kit, and together they were known as "The Box & The Book". Intended for the home prescriber, it was also used extensively in the U.S. and Canada by the lay and professional medical communities: homeopaths, midwives, nurses and physicians.
Because of its great success, The Box and the Book helped homeopathy to gain a remarkable foothold in the United States, as evidenced by the support of four U.S. presidents. By 1900, there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, over 100 homeopathic hospitals, and more than 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies in the U.S.
Today, unfortunately, homeopathy remains relatively unknown in many parts of the world. Even in countries with a deep homeopathic history, such as the U.S., most people do not know what homeopathy is. How many are being deprived of effective and affordable medical care because they have not directly experienced the healing power of homeopathy?
